Overcoming path dependency: path generation in open systems
Studies on societal path dependencies tend to focus on mechanisms that anchor and stabilize national trajectories while paying less attention to transnational interactions and multilevel governance. This paper explores processes of path transformation in societies that are presumed to have the characteristics of open systems. Two pairs of case studies are presented and compared. The first illus...
متن کاملOn Path Observables in Open Quantum Systems
We discuss several scenarios for breaking the time-reversal symmetry in quantum dissipative systems. We show that already on the level of semi-classical open systems weakly coupled to its environment, a repeated measurement of ‘non-classical’ observables leads to modified relations between the irreversibility of the process and the amount of dissipation. Our results are obtained by analyzing th...
متن کاملPath Dependency and Path Creation in a Strategic Perspective
Path dependency and, recently, path creation are frequently used concepts in the social sciences. However, they were born as individual issues and in most cases they are still discussed separately. First, the path dependency concept has spread. In the general sense, path dependency refers to the idea that events occurring at an earlier point in time will affect events occurring at a later point...
متن کاملMigration to Open-Standard Interorganizational Systems: Network Effects, Switching Costs, and Path Dependency
This study examines firms’ migration across interorganizational systems (IOS) that are built on standards with relatively different degrees of openness. As firms seek to improve inter-firm coordination using network technologies, open standards are becoming increasingly important. To better understand the process of standards diffusion, we investigate the migration from relatively less open IOS...
متن کاملToward Dependency Path based Entailment
We present our submission to the RTE2 challenge which takes steps in the direction of dynamically entailing hypotheses via their dependency paths. We evaluate semantic similarity between sentences utilizing corpus co-occurrence estimates of various dependency path features and show a 2.7% improvement on the RTE1 dataset.
